The Three Hares Gallery has been running since 1967 although it has been renamed by its owner the artist Eleanor Ludgate in recognition of the connection Chagford has with this ancient symbol. Eleanor has also created a Three Hares Trail with leaflets available in the gallery and a link on this website.
Eleanor has designed her own three hares symbol for her collection of art named Devon’s Nature in Art and the gallery showcases some of her wonderful wildlife and landscape paintings together with some beautiful sculptures, ceramics, bronzes and gift items all made by Westcountry artists.
There are also many prints and greetings cards all inspired, painted and produced in Devon and truly unique. The gallery sells a large range of stunning photographic cards and prints which capture the dramatic scenery of Dartmoor.
Wherever possible we produce everything locally and all the Picture Framing is done in our own workshop.
About the artist Eleanor Ludgate
Eleanor has been a professional artist since leaving Art College in Guildford where she studied fabric design. Although she did not continue in this line of art its influence in her sense of design can be clearly seen in all her paintings.
Eleanor first started her career by designing greetings cards firstly selling her paintings of wildflowers, birds and butterflies to card companies and then by opening her own Greetings Card business ‘Ludgate Studio Cards’ in 1987. She also sold her original paintings through exhibitions and art galleries.
In 1989 Eleanor opened her own Art Gallery in Sidmouth in Devon and ran this successfully for 10 years. In 2000 Eleanor & her husband moved to France and opened a second gallery in the pretty ochre village of Roussillon in the Luberon area of Provence where she lived and painted for eight years. Then in 2008 Eleanor returned to England and back to Devon to Chagford where she had known the beautiful art gallery and had sold paintings there previously and as it was on the market at that time it seemed the perfect place to settle.
Eleanor has a studio in the gallery and is constantly inspired by her long walks in the stunning countryside where she lives to produce an amazing array of artwork which is for sale in the gallery. Eleanor paints in both oil and watercolours and in a wide variety of styles. As well as her original paintings there are many prints and a large collection of greetings cards made from her paintings.
